Since the early 1980s, Peter and Meredith Quartermain have designed and produced a series of original letterpress bookmarks through their imprints Slug Press and Keefer Street Press in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Quartermain Letterpress Bookmark Collection represents over thirty of these bookmarks, many of which have been mailed to friends and family in various parts of the world over the years.
We started printing these around 1981, often as Christmas gifts, but sometimes to commemorate special people or occasions like birthdays. We did a 30th anniversary bookmark for Duthie Books, for instance. The bookmarks are designed, set in a metal chase and printed on a letterpress using movable type. Most but not all contain quotes. The images consist of dingbats, ornaments (such as ornamental borders) and the occasional cut. The fonts used are widely diverse and sometimes mixed fonts is a feature of the design. They are often in more than one colour.
