About this collection

Here we present a portion of the Emily Carr Document Collection, specifically letters between 1938 and 1945, the year of Carr’s death. The letters provide an intimate view into the artist’s life through her conversations with the gallery. Letters touch on: exhibition decisions - timing and gallery options including a measly $5 room rental charge; Carr’s relationship with Lawren Harris; Carr’s many health issues - which sometimes requires surrogates to write her letters; and more.
