About this collection

From 1999 to 2005, grunt gallery produced four iterations of the LIVE Biennial of Performance Art: six-week citywide festivals that included up to 50 performances, panels, and other events each. The festivals ran at 20 to 30 galleries and arts organizations presenting dozens of artist and curators from Vancouver, BC, and beyond.

2019 will mark the 20th anniversary of the first series, LIVE at the end of the Century, an excellent opportunity to revist this collection and the work of participating BC artists and curators including Aiyyana Maracle, Dana Claxton, Paul Wong, Margaret Dragu, Rebecca Belmore, and many others.

The early years of LIVE were unprecedented in the province in terms of facilitating and bring light to performance art in a diverse range of styles and individual works. Since the late 1980s Vancouver’s traditions of underground cabaret, independent artist collectives, and performance art by Indigenous, Queer, and other minority artists had been mainstays of grunt’s programming, and the development of LIVE sought to foreground these practices and widen audiences. The festival’s positioning as a home for experimental and boundary-pushing practices helped cement a strong reputation of cutting edge performance work in BC during this period, which would resonate in its influence of performing arts programming elsewhere in Canada and internationally.

Though it now operates as an organization independent of grunt gallery, the LIVE Biennial continues to bring importance performance work to Vancouver audiences, most recently in 2017.
