About this collection

The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford is a not-for profit organization located in Abbotsford, British Columbia. In 2016, The Reach launched a permanent exhibition called Voices of the Valley, designed in partnership with the MSA Museum Society, which is also located in Abbotsford. Voices of the Valley combines two significant historical collections from the respective institutions.

The exhibition focuses on themes and events that impacted the local Abbotsford community throughout early settlement and colonization and relates them to the present day. Multiple viewpoints are presented through the display of regional visual and material culture, archival documents, and related ephemera.

Especial consideration is given to preserving, recording, and sharing knowledge about, the material culture of the indigenous Stό:lō Nation of the Fraser River Valley. This aspect of the exhibition is the focus of the current collection, which includes images of cedar baskets, embroidered and beaded leatherwork, and stone hand-tools, such as points, mauls, mortars, and adzes, from the Voices of the Valley exhibition.
