About

The Emily Carr document collection was donated to the Vancouver Art Gallery by individuals, the Emily Carr Trust, and the Emily Carr Arts Centre Society between 1983 and 1992. The records, created between 1924 and 1951, consist of original correspondence from Carr to A. S. Grisgby, Jock MacDonald, Betty Streatfield and others; photographs of Carr's parents; her will; publishing contracts and letters of agreement; as well as posthumous exhibition records for the period of 1946 to 1951.

The digitization standards set forth in the Federal Agencies Digitization Initiative's (FADGI)Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Cultural Heritage Materials: Creation of Raster Image Master Files were followed. Because we primarily digitized handwritten correspondence and typewritten documents, the FADGI guidelines that most closely corresponded with this format were applied for each item, generally 400 ppi, 8-bit grayscale mode .tiff files (for the preservation master).  A .jpeg was created for the access file, and a .gif as the thumbnail.
